After the Press Conference

After he disassembled his dead man’s line, Tony Kiritsis was arrested and put into a police cruiser, and law enforcement escorted Dick Hall out on a gurney. Back inside the apartment complex, local journalists wanted answers. Here we see two interviews from that night.

The first is a rare interview with Tony Kiritsis’ older brother Stephen. Few even knew he had been at Crestwood Village throughout the entire live press conference. In the interview, Stephen refers to a previous incident in 1968 where Tony had taken his sister Effie hostage. According to Stephen, he knew back then that there would be similar problems with Tony in the future. Regarding Tony, Stephen said, “He’s a fantastic man, smart, everything, but his intelligence goes haywire.”

The second video contains an interview with an exhausted rookie Deputy Prosecutor David Rimstidt, who along with Deputy Prosecutor George Martz handled the incident as it was happening because Marion County Prosecutor James Kelley was out of town.

For an excellent account of what it felt like to be in the room that night on February 10, 1977, check out the article written by our good friend Tom Cochrun in his Trace article “A Time of Hostages: A Reporter’s Notebook.”
